A-Z Science: Transformation

The first transformation we are looking at is tadpoles into frogs.

We are doing a series of activities learning about their transformation .  Mainly observing and recreating them at each stage .

Check out our tadpole activities that we have done so far.

Another idea would be to look st the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly.

Crane magnetic pick up

I tried this activity with my four year old about 1 1/2 ago and he loved it. So I wanted to try it with my 2.1 year old and he was more interested in the objects than the activity. Dylan liked using the wind up crane too. But I with Dylan my eldest he sat at the table do his attention was more focused .

Then Dylan came to check it out.
I used the sorting activity to stretch it for him. Wher he had to identify if it was magnetic or not? I also used objects that had both parts that were and weren't . But decided to place it in the magnetic part of the table if any part was magnetic.

I encouraged Dylan 4.9 to talk us through what he was doing and what he found using keywords like magnetic. I recorded this to keep. This helps develop his confidence and scientific enquiry skills .

We talked about what we notice I out the two piles and that the magnetic side were mostly metals but that not all metals are magnetic .

Dylan did this at 2.5

A-Z Science: Questioning - potato roll

This post is linked to two series A-Z science for Questioning and out potato fun.

So the question: which size potato rolls down the slide the fastest??

My son predicted that the big one would but wasn't sure why.

Dylan had a target to describe objects in terms of size . So he chose a big, small and medium sized potato.

This was an unplanned activity and we didn't record results but I timed the roll and he observed what happened.

The medium and big potato were close in size and the way he let them go meant that they took in terms being the fastest.

Q is for Questioning: Does an egg crack every time you drop it?

II had already researched and planned to do a simple science experiment when my son saw the out off date eggs on the side and asked if he could crack the egg. So I said I posed a question ( which we are doing for the A-Z science series )

Does an egg crack every time you drop it?

So we decided on the four surfaces to drop the four eggs on . The pavement, grass, mud and the trampoline . We reused an egg to roll down the slide as an extra activity.

I got Dylan to predict whether the egg would crack or. It for each surface. He predicted right for each .

You may of noticed I put a bag down just incase to help clear the mess up easily .

So we concluded that no the egg doesn't always crack when you drop it. Dylan described the surface that cracked the egg as a hard surface and that the egg bounced a little on the grass.

I am going to do the egg in vinegar demonstration which I have never done where the egg is meant to be fairly bouncy . We will see.

A-Z Science: O for Observation: Daffodil nature walk

This post is part of the A-Z series that we follow from Inspiration Laboritories
http://inspirationlaboratories.com/o-is-for-observation-skills/
O is for Obsrvation.

We went for a walk to the shops and then the park and on the way I showed Dylan my three year old what a daffodil was and he wanted to pick one. I don't usually but I thought to build on his excitement and curiosity we will.

Sowhen we got back we put them in a vase and  observed how it changed over the next couple of days until it opened.
I told him we need to put them in water and we need to make sure they have sunlight.
I asked him to predict was was going to happen. He said its hoinv to open up into a yellow flower.

I might get him to draw a before and after picture but he is still a little reluctant to draw objects and just likes to doodle.

After a few days we noticed they had opened and we observed them and he did draw a beautifu Picture .

He also made 3D daffodil cards for his two nannies for Mother's Day.

A-Z Science: N is for Night

So fellow bloggers are exploring a night theme.

So we decided to explore our garden at night time. We had a torch and off we went. We even had a night time bounce on the trampoline and the looked at the stars.
We searched for animals and listened out for sounds. Unfortunately we only heard a motorbike. We saw a moth and was frightened by a bird flapping its wings. We couldn't see or draw the moon so that's an activity for another day!

He was so excited when I told him earlier that day.
